The December edition of The Advocate magazine features Pope Francis as Person of the Year. The Pope has a “NO H8” message photoshopped on his right cheek. Next to his photo is a quote from the pope’s interview with reporters in July, while en route from Brazil to Rome.
No H8” is a reference to the NOH8 campaign opposing the passage
of Proposition 8 in California, which amended the state Constitution to
ban same-sex marriage.
“If someone is gay and seeks the Lord with good will, who am I to judge?”
The Advocate’s chose the Pope as “Person of the Year” over Edie Windsor, of U.S. v. Windsor,
the Supreme Court’s DOMA case. The magazine refereed to Windsor as “a hero
to LGBT Americans for taking the final punch in the fight against the
discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act.”
The Advocate in naming Pope Francisas Person of the Year, states, “…LGBT Catholics who remain in the church now have more reason to hope that change is coming.”
PPSN - "Note the use of the words "hope" and "change" in The Advocate's verbiage.
