Noam Federman, a well-known right-wing activist, and others were held for questioning by the police after they assembled near the Jaffa Gate with lambs and goats intending to perform the Temple-era mitzvot.
Last week, Israel’s Veterinary Services refused to authorize a ritual sacrifice, held outside the walls of the Old City, that the activists had planned to honor Passover. Federman’s group claimed the sacrifice was intended to remind all Jews of the Temple era and educate others about Passover laws.
“After preventing us from fulfilling the mitzvah of the Passover sacrifice in its proper place, in violation of the law and of a Supreme Court ruling, now the authorities are plotting to stop us from even learning about the way the mitzvah is to be performed,” a spokesperson for the group said about the government’s refusal.
