Obama the underdog used debate as fundraiser - lost on purpose?

By Michael D. Shoesmith

Funny, isn't it, how the likes of Chris Mathews and Michael Moore, two dyed-in-the-wool liberals have so heavily criticized the performance of the 'anointed one' in last night's debate? If you are convinced of the poor exhibition from Obama you are decidedly on the side of the left on this one. There is little if any attempt from the left to follow the script - defend the President no matter the cost.

Left-leaning commentators hit President Barack Obama hard on TV and the Internet after the first presidential debate in Denver on Wednesday night, saying GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney handily defeated his more experienced opponent.

MSNBC hosts were “stunned” by Obama’s performance, suggesting the president was rusty for not having debated in four years.

I watched the debate from the comfort of this very blog where we streamed it live. I also watched Obama's speech to the UN. We have two very different people here when we actually compare the two presentations. Clearly Obama is better at reading from a teleprompter than going from memory but does that explain his style, his posture, his technique?

So we have to ask ourselves, is there more going on here than we know? Is there an attempt to paint Obama as an underdog, almost out of breath, like the big-eared Hancock who was a hero at death's door but resurrected himself to a glorious finish?

Need more solid evidence? Consider the email sent out this morning, the morning after the debate, sent out by Obama himself which reads...

Friend --
I hope I made you proud out there explaining the vision we share for this country.
Now we need to go win this election -- the most important thing that will happen tonight is what you do (or don't do) to help in the little time we have left:

Thank you,
Barack
Oh the impotency. Oh the plea for pity! Clearly Obama is reaching out to his liberal base here - the bleeding hearts of the masses. If Obama doesn't win who will buy you the newest i-phone? Who will put gas in your car or write you a check from his personal stash if Obama doesn't get re-elected? Who, I say... WHO?

I'm telling you this was designed as a fundraiser for the Obama campaign. Look for a very different performance in coming debates. This ain't over.

  1. i had the same thoughts whilst watching it and immediately realized the strategy behind it. like you allude to, there's a larger picture that the obama team is aiming for. they know they have the election locked. aside from other reasons like you alluded to, they also realize that they need to keep gop money 'in' the presidential race so they don't throw their juggernaut money-machines (rove and company) into keeping control of the house. obama needs the house and it's very contested right now and senate elections are tighter than his presidential race. this is about the larger picture. one thing we know is that the obama campaign is very calculated, and they think in terms of the bigger picture. if he decidedly won the debate, we would have seen gop monies fly from the romny campaign like a flock of geese. good job, mr. president.
