Rights and the Second Amendment - by Author Neil Mammen

Many Americans think that government gives us our rights. But this is simply false. The Declaration of Independence articulates clearly that we are endowed not by the government but by our Creator with certain inalienable rights. Governments are there to secure and protect the rights that we already have.

Rights have to come from God. If rights came from Government, then Government could take ethically take those rights away. If rights came from a majority vote, then the majority could choose to take those rights away. And if that were true then no one could complain that the rights of the American slaves had been unjustly taken from them when majorities kept slavery legal. You also can’t assign yourself rights, otherwise you could go around claiming that you have the right to be emperor, which is quite silly.

The reality is that rights can only come from someone who has authority over all mankind. Well, the only being that has that authority is the creator of all mankind. Thus rights must come from God, the creator.
Now once we understand that rights come from God, there need be no arguments about the 2nd Amendment when it comes to self-defense. Let’s think this through.

Do we have the unalienable right to protect ourselves from harm? Do we have the unalienable right to protect our wives and kids from harm? Both must be answered, “Yes.” In which case we must be able to purchase and own those tools that allow for that personal defense. Do you see now that the right to buy and bear arms is a personal unalienable right, and must never depend on a government approved police force; and more importantly neither the government nor the constitution can restrict it. Thus, to a gun-owner, it matters not if the 2nd Amendment was about standing militias or anything similar. Why? Because the right to protect your family and bear arms are God given unalienable right and they precede, predate and override any interpretation of the 2nd Amendment!

  1. I am a follower of Christ in Colorado. It is in vogue here to collect multiple, semi-automatic weapons - I've routinely heard collections discussed at children's birthday parties (I have two small children). It is easy here for many unstable youths and young adults to secure a weapon and live out a violent fantasy. It is difficult to 'be ready' with a gun at any moment when moving about in our lives. Practically speaking, most people do not and would not have a gun at the ready. As an example, there were three with concealed carry weapons within the Aurora theatre. They didn't get a chance to use them.

How armed do we 'need' to be to be safe? At what point is my culture choosing, for all practical purposes, the right to bear arms over the rights of my children to live?
