A recent attack on Israeli tourists in the Bulgarian town of Burgas is the eighth major incident in which Israel has accused the Iranian government and its allies of planning to attack, or of attacking, Israeli citizens. Iran denies involvement in any of the incidents, but it accuses Israel of a string of deadly attacks on Iranian nuclear scientists over the past year.
An attack in Istanbul, apparently targeted at Israeli Consul General to Istanbul Moshe Kamhi, injured eight people. Turkish police initially blamed the Kurdish Worker’s Party (PKK) for the attack, but Israeli officials later said the evidence pointed to Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militia and political party based in Lebanon.
2. Baku, Azerbaijan – Jan. 19, 2012
Azerbaijan police officials announced the arrest of two Azeri nationals, one of them a resident of the Iranian city of Ardabil, for planning attacks on Israeli citizens who worked at a Jewish religious school in Baku. Azerbaijan accused Iran of being behind the attacks, but Iran denies the charges.
3. New Delhi and Tbilisi, Georgia – Feb. 13, 2012
A car used by Israeli diplomats was blown up, apparently by a “sticky bomb” placed on the car by a passing motorcyclist, according to Indian police. Four people in the vehicle were injured. A similar bomb was discovered on an Israeli diplomatic car in the Georgian capital of Tblisi on the same day, and Israel blamed Iran’s government for the twin attacks, a charge that Iran denies.
4. Bangkok, Thailand – Feb. 19, 2012
Thai police say that three Iranian nationals accidentally set off “sticky bombs” that Thai police believe the men intended to use in attacks against Israeli diplomats in Thailand. One of the men, Saied Moradi, reportedly emerged from his rental house after the accidental explosion, and threw other homemade bombs at Thai bystanders and at a Thai police officer.
5. Nairobi, Kenya – June 24, 2012
Two Iranian nationals were arrested after being linked to an illegal shipment of 33 pounds of RDX explosives through Kenya’s main seaport of Mombasa. At an arraignment hearing the two were accused of having planned “acts intending to cause grievous harm,” and Kenyan police told reporters that they were seen driving past the British embassy, the Israeli embassy, and a Jewish synagogue inNairobi.
6. Limassol, Cyprus – July 15, 2012
Israel accused Iran of plotting to attack Israeli citizens in Cyprus after Cypriot officials arrested a Swedish citizen of Lebanese descent. Police say he was tracking the movements of Israelis in Cyprus.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hezbollah of orchestrating the attacks. Tehrandenies involvement.
7. Burgas, Bulgaria – July 18, 2012
A bus carrying Israeli tourists exploded in what appears to have been a suicide bomb attack. The bomber – described as a lanky young man with a Michigan driver’s license, wearing plaid shorts and a baseball cap – was among those killed, including the bus driver, and five Israeli tourists. Israeli officials blame Iran-backed Hezbollah. Iran state TV called the charges “ridiculous.”
