I never thought I would see the day that The Columbine School Shooting would not be known as the worst school shooting in American history. But sadly, it no longer is after a 20 year old young man walked into an elementary school in Connecticut and killed 20 children ranging in age from 5 years old to 10 years old and 6 staff members, and his own mother with 2 hand guns and a semi-automatic shot gun.
I still remember, where I was the day the Columbine School shooting happened, and I will always remember where I was and what was happening when I found out about this shooting.
I was at home preparing for the end of my college semester. My wife was putting coats away when her grandmother called. I watched as the reports came in, stories of tragedy, loss and mourning, but there were also stories of heroes that rose up in the midst of the storm. Leadership within the halls of Newtown, CT Sandy Hook Elementary, as teachers, faculty and even the students, just kids, all were very brave and either led people to safety or were shielding, protecting each other. Some teachers even asked students to pray if they believed.
The Bible speaks of finding comfort in any situation you may be facing, as Christ went through great suffering and pain for us here on Earth as He died for our sins, the gift He left with us is peace in troubled times.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Psalm 119:50
My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.
2 Corinthians 1:3-7
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.
Christ is with us every day, even when tragedy occurs. While we may not feel He is there, or understand the reason why something happens, Christ as the Bible says is the “same today, yesterday, and forever.”
So how do we walk in the “spirit” of what God wants us to do here?
I made a post yesterday that can explain this, it said:
Lord Jesus please send your comforting Holy Spirit to minister to their hearts. Send the men, women, & children that will shower them with love, peace, & compassion. As your Word says, we must be 'doers of the Word" that we are Your Hands & Feet.
This is so ever true when loss comes, many people struggle through the various emotions, as some are doing now. That it is time in America for the church to rise up and show the world that we truly are the Salt and the Light. That we do care for others, that we do have a hope a peace beyond all understand, and healing that can transcend even the wise scholars of the land.
So I leave you with this, what are you yes YOU, doing to help Newtown and those affected by this tragedy? Or better yet, what are YOU doing in your own hometown so when the day comes that something happens, Lord forbid, are you ready to be the Hands & Feet Jesus called us to be?
