Central Park preservation workers got an historic surprise on Friday when they discovered that the Revolutionary War-era cannon they were cleaning for refurbishment still contained live powder and ammunition.
The cannon, which was a gift to the park during the Civil War, held a cannonball, cotton wadding, and more than 800 grams of black powder that police say was still capable of firing. Parkgoers had been unknowingly playing around a loaded cannon, too, for almost a century before the weapon was brought inside for storage in 1996.
Regardless, that cannon is probably far from the most dangerous thing one could find in Central Park.
