Pope Benedict XVI is stepping down from his role at the end of the month, citing his age and failing health as the reasons for his decision.
The decision marks the first time in more than 500 years that a sitting pontiff has left his position voluntarily.
Benedict told cardinals at the Vatican on Monday he will leave his post on Feb. 28, "with full freedom," reportedly saying "my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry."
