If you've ever seen the majesty of the Grand Canyon or the intensity of Niagara Falls you have personally witnessed the power of glut[tony].
In fact, the next time you're marveling at these natural wonders consider this: they are the result of God's judgment on the earth, when God caused a glut of water, a deluge, surfeit, stuff, satiate, gorge, cram, surplus, excess, superabundance. These are all synonyms for "glut."
Those are examples of glut on an epic scale. The Bible warns against gluttony on the personal scale as well. The effects of it are well known. Benjamin Franklin once said "If you want to lengthen your years, lessen your meals" or something to that effect. Gluttony is responsible for many, many illnesses. Doctors often tell their patients that much of their suffering could be alleviated by losing weight. Often times women will be told to avoid getting pregnant until they drop a few pounds.
Gluttony is a powerful force, seldom, if ever used for good. When people eat in a gluttonous way they are doing so in excess. They are consuming more than their bodies can handle. This is very destructive. Gluttony manifests earlier with things like milk chocolate, red meat, etc. Eating seeds, nuts, berries, vegetables doesn't cross the line into gluttony so soon. But even those healthy alternatives can take on a form of gluttony if ingested in extreme amounts.
Age can also play a factor. When I was young I was very active and growing. My body needed calories and protein... lots of it. When I hit thirty I continued eating as though I was still an active, growing boy. By the time I was forty three I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and I was overweight. The doctor told me all of my symptoms (weak knees, sore hip, need for blood pressure meds) would all disappear if I would only lose seventy pounds.
So I embraced moderation. I ate practically the same food. I cut out the heavy starches like most bread, potatoes, and pasta. I dramatically reduced my portion sizes and now I'm losing weight. I walk more and I feel great.
So do like Benjamin Franklin said - lengthen your years by lessening you meals. Reject gluttony and live a long, vibrant life... in Jesus' name!
