We received an email today asking us about the existence of so-called 'guardian angels.' Do they exist? Or are they merely made-up figments of someone's imagination? There is an answer... and it's found in the Bible.
The word 'angel' is found 201 times in the KJV Bible. The plural, 'angels' is found 93 times for a total of 294 times. In all of those references are there any which could be interpreted as meaning 'guardian angel?' In fact, there is one.
Hebrews 1:13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? There we have a very certain definition of what angels are and their role in the earth. It says they are "all" ministering spirits. All of them. Not some... all. Whom do they minister to? We know from verse 6 that they worship God. They do His bidding obviously. But verse 14 says they are sent by God to those who "shall be" something. This implies that those they are sent to minister to are not yet this thing... and being in the state of "shall be" seems to be a key here. They are sent to assist; to help the people reach a certain state.
14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
"Heirs of salvation"
Where have we seen that word "heirs" before? Ah yes...
Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:Clearly, from Hebrews 1 and again in Romans 8 we see that these "heirs" are us, the adopted children of God, right? Of course. The angels, "all" of them, are ministers to those who "shall be" heirs... who "shall be" adopted. In other words, the angels are guarding these future saints until they, as coerced as it may be, finally make that decision to partake in the adoption process and accept the free gift of salvation.
17 ¶And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
So yes, the case could be made for "guardian angels", protectors of those who are foreknown. It makes sense, does it not, when one considers as I have the atrocious acts of stupidity we committed prior to getting "Saved." Was it angels... guardian angels? The Bible backs it up. I wonder how many angels He dispatched to MY mother's bed side at my birth. It was probably pretty crowded in there I would think. But's that's a story for another day.
One has to keep this in mind as well, when dealing with this subject - Jesus said in Matthew 18:10 "Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven." I have also had experience with angels in my life, so I would, or could know, to a certain extent.
