I have always maintained that these two terrorist bombers were NOT acting alone. In fact, they had help! Help in the designing and constructing of the IEDs. Perhaps too, they had help in the making or selection of the detonators and explosive material used in the IEDs and in the planning of how to conduct the assault.
Yes, the INTERNET and YOUTUBE are full of material that pertains to IEDs, explosives, and how to mix Toxic agents or Chemicals. However, one must know how to do this properly or they will run the risk of killing themselves. What one reads on the Internet or views on YouTube, is not always a safe method, and you are indeed putting your own life at risk.
We, as a nation, should be made aware of what to look for, How to react when we see or find something that may cause us harm, and who to contact.
Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), and Chemical IEDs, can be made out of ANYTHING, and they can be made to look benign.
The following are only a few examples - A bowel that has a cover, a pot or pressure cooker, a paint can, a planter, a large water jug, a portable water cooler, an igloo container/cooler, a work bag, a computer bag, a wooden box, a hard plastic or fiberglass container, a briefcase, a suitcase, a backpack, a fanny-pack, a large store shopping bag, a small refrigerator, a stuffed toy, a pillow, PVC pipe/s with both ends capped, Steel pipe/s with both ends capped, Copper tubing that looks like it has a "wick" inside one end of the copper pipe, or vase. The smell of sulfur (this is the smell of burning time fuse), ammonia, chlorine/Clorox (this is a gas that burns the eyes and lungs), or garlic smell (possible mustard gas).
The above examples in and of themselves should not always be considered a threat. Use your common sense; IF someone is standing there with a jacket on, and it is 80 degrees outside, call 911 and report him/her as a possible suicide bomber. IF something looks like it does not belong there or it stands out in the natural surroundings of the area, or it was left behind/unattended by someone, THIS could be an IED! DO NOT TOUCH IT!!! MOVE AWAY and put a solid object (car, solid wall, etc.) between you and the object. Then call 911 and report it to the police. IF you use your cell phone near the device, you could set it off!! Remember… DO NOT TOUCH IT AND MOVE AWAY!
Always look around you and be aware of your surroundings. It is better to be safe than to be injured or killed. There are people here in our great country that wish to do us harm. The police cannot be everywhere, and they do not mind the help! Trust me, the police would much rather respond to a backpack full of books and food items that was left behind by someone, than to a backpack full of explosives! Be Proactive, not reactive!
FOR POLICE OFFICERS – I OFFER THE FOLLOWING –
Remember… Try not to get tunnel vision during your calls for service, look around the premises. People that ARE involved in building IEDs, will usually have some of the following:
Ø A soldering station
Ø Electronic Components Such as: Switches, Relays, Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), Wire,
Ø terminal connectors, Resistors, Capacitors and Circuit Boards
Ø Numerous Project Boxes
Ø Various Types of Batteries
Ø Electronically Altered Items (for other than their intended use)
Ø Chemical Stills (for extracting a chemical agents)
Ø Propane or Other Pressurized Tanks, which appear to have been altered
IEDs Dos & DON'TS FOR POLICE OFFICERS ARRIVING "ON SCENE."
DO NOT – PARK YOU VEHICLE/UNIT NEXT TO THE DEVICE (30 feet minimum)
DO NOT – TOUCH, MOVE, OR PICK UP THE DEVICE
DO NOT – STAND NEXT TO THE DEVICE WITH YOUR RADIO
DO NOT – LEAVE THE DEVICE UNATTENDED
DO NOT – ASSUME THAT THE DEVICE IS HARMLESS
DO NOT – ASSUME THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE DEVICE
DO NOT – ALLOW ANYONE NEAR THE DEVICE (OTHER THAN A QUALIFIED BOMB TECHNICIAN)
DO – UPON VERIFICATION, CALL FOR ASSISTANCE (BACK UP, FIRE DEPT., BOMB SQUAD, and AMBULANCE)
DO – SEAL OFF THE AREA (MINIMUM OF 1000 FEET UNTIL ADVISED DIFFERENTLY)
DO – PARK YOUR VEHICLE/UNIT BETWEEN THE DEVICE, AND THE DIRECTION OF LETHAL DAMAGE
DO – PLACE A PHYSICAL BARRIER BETWEEN YOU AND THE DEVICE
DO – SEARCH FOR SECONDARY DEVICES
REMEMBER – TERRORISTS ARE PATIENT
US Citizens have short memories, and look for a "quick fix" to a problem. The terrorists are very much aware of this and realize, they only need to be patient… sooner or later, we will let our guard down
Ø The absence of a "specific, credible threat" doesn't mean there is no threat
Ø The terrorist's main goal is to inflict as many casualties as possible, in hopes of causing panic, thereby demonstrating, and exploiting the targeted government's "weakness"
