Gender identity disorder (GID) is the formal diagnosis used by psychologists and physicians to describe persons who experience significant gender dysphoria (discontent with the sex they were assigned at birth and/or the gender roles associated with that sex). It describes the symptoms related to transsexualism, as well as less extreme manifestations of gender dysphoria. Individuals with GID are commonly referred to as "transgender". Though no recent research has been conducted, the prevalance of GID is estimated to be approximately 1 in 30,000, though some researchers suggest that the prevalence is actually significantly higher than this. Similarly, little research has been done regarding sex ratios of GID, but previous research indicates that people assigned male at birth are three times more likely than those assigned female at birth to be transsexual.

GID is classified as a medical disorder by the ICD-10 CM^[5] and by the DSM-IV TR. The upcoming DSM-5, however, will remove the diagnosis and replace it with a related diagnosis called "Gender dysphoria".^[7] Controversy exists as to whether GID should be classified as a mental disorder.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, until 1974 homosexuality was a mental illness.  Freud had alluded to homosexuality numerous times in his writings, and had concluded that paranoia and homosexuality were inseparable.  Other psychiatrists wrote copiously on the subject, and homosexuality was “treated” on a wide basis.  There was little or no suggestion within the psychiatric community that homosexuality might be conceptualized as anything other than a mental illness that needed to be treated.  And, of course, homosexuality was listed as a mental illness in DSM-II.

Then in 1970 gay activists protested against the APA convention in San Francisco.  These scenes were repeated in 1971, and as people came out of the “closet” and felt empowered politically and socially, the APA directorate became increasingly uncomfortable with their stance.  In 1973 the APA’s nomenclature task force recommended that homosexuality be declared normal.  The trustees were not prepared to go that far, but they did vote to remove homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses by a vote of 13 to 0, with 2 abstentions.  This decision was confirmed by a vote of the APA membership, and homosexuality was no longer listed in the seventh edition of DSM-II, which was issued in 1974.

 "Then for a while, researchers neglected the mental health needs of the gay population, because there was a fear of stigmatizing the population as a whole," Meyer said. "But there's been a pretty big change, even since the early 2000s, toward paying attention to mental health issues in the gay population."

It's long been known that gay men and women suffer certain disorders - specifically, depression, anxiety and substance abuse - at higher rates than straight people. Less clear is whether they also have higher rates of suicide or attempted suicide.

Gays have mental illness and can be cured, says doctor

THE claim that homosexuality is a mental illness that can be "cured" has re-emerged after an American professor said that some gay people could become heterosexual if they wanted to.

The study was by Dr Robert Spitzer, a psychiatry professor at Columbia University who was one of many professionals involved in a 1973 decision by the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders.

Yesterday, at the annual meeting of the association in New Orleans, Prof Spitzer presented the results of telephone interviews with 200 homosexuals who claimed they had changed their orientation and concluded that a significant percentage - 66 per cent of the men and 44 per cent of the women - had achieved "good heterosexual functioning".
