Officials said the exercise began on July 7 and would last through July 11.

The officials said the exercise, dubbed "Sustainable Security-92," was meant to enhance the combat readiness of the Iranian Navy.

"The drills started on Sunday and will last for five days," Northern Fleet commander Adm. Khordad Hakimi said.

Iran deployed the Navy's Northern Fleet for the Caspian exercise. Hakimi said a range of naval combat units were participating.

Officials said this marked the first major exercise between Iran and Russia in the Caspian since 2009.

The officials said the exercise was part of an effort by Moscow and Tehran to improve military cooperation, including in the Caspian, energy rights of which have been disputed.
