Professor Zimmerman |
The push is on to get Obama a third term... the narrative is being constructed now for a referendum question on the next ballot... if they can get enough steam behind it.
"The time has come to end presidential term limits, because continuing the restrictions on how long one can serve in the country's highest office is bad for the United States,"claims Jonathan Zimmerman a history and education professor at New York University
In an opinion story published in the Washington Post, Zimmerman says deciding whether a president deserves a third, fourth or more terms should be left entirely to the American people. He says the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which placed a two-term limit on the position, should not be the deciding factor on a President's term.
Below is a portion of the 22nd Amendment ratified in 1951:
"No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once."
The amendment was ratified shortly after Franklin Roosevelt was elected to the fourth of his White House terms. Roosevelt, a Democrat, died in office before completing his last term.
Unbelievably, Zimmerman went on to declare, that since President Obama's job-approval numbers are now down drastically, it could be that the nation's chief executive is being held down by the fact that he's in his final term. This factor, he claims, gives GOP opponents and even Democrat opponents little incentive to support Obama on issues that might hamper their own re-election chances.
In that Washington Post Article, Zimmerman writes -
"Many of Obama’s fellow Democrats have distanced themselves from the reform and from the president. Even former president Bill Clinton has said that Americans should be allowed to keep the health insurance they have. Or consider the reaction to the Iran nuclear deal. Regardless of his political approval ratings, Obama could expect Republican senators such as Lindsey Graham (S.C.) and John McCain (Ariz.) to attack the agreement. But if Obama could run again, would he be facing such fervent objections from Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Robert Menendez (D-N.J.)? Probably not. Democratic lawmakers would worry about provoking the wrath of a president who could be reelected. Thanks to term limits, though, they’ve got little to fear."
Zimmerman continues in the piece, "Nor does Obama have to fear the voters, which might be the
scariest problem of all. If he chooses, he could simply ignore their
will. And if the people wanted him to serve another term, why shouldn’t
they be allowed to award him one?"
WHAT DO YOU THINK? Do you prefer to have presidential term limits? Would you rather a president be able to run as many times as they want? Leave your comments below.

I am confident Obama will serve a third term: Calamities always occur in sets of three.
ReplyDeleteNO NO NO! The idea of "an Obama" is the VERY REASON why the 22nd Amendment was ratified. NO NO NO!
ReplyDelete"that since President Obama's job-approval numbers are now down drastically, it could be that the nation's chief executive is being held down by the fact that he's in his final term."
ReplyDeleteor maybe because the American people are finally realizing he is an idiot, who is destroying this country as fast as he can....just a thought.
Term limits, PLEASE...not just for President, but for ALL who serve in gov't seats of authority.
ReplyDeleteThe office of President should be renamed "Obama". We have already renamed health care Obama care. Much use should be made of the name. We can save much money by doing away with Congress, as well as the Supreme Court. Then we can have Obama everything.
ReplyDeletePerhaps scientists can clone Obama so that an immortal line of succession can be estalbishe. The United States should be renamed to go along this this new government as the ObamaNation.
The national fruit should be the banana, but it should be renamed the Obama.
From the article: "Democratic lawmakers would worry about provoking the wrath of a president who could be reelected. Thanks to term limits, though, they’ve got little to fear." Actually, it is the fear of wrath that might keep them from doing what they believe is right for their constituents. To remove that fear through presidential term limits allows both dems and republicans to stop pandering to the president and start listening to the people. Term limits are good.
ReplyDeleteSupport term limits for Congress, Supreme Court, and all elected officials - period! hussein Obama will do enough damage to the United States in two loooooooong terms. He should run for the president of Iran or one other of his other favorite nations!
ReplyDeleteNO, TERM LIMITS NEED TO BE ON ALL AREAS OF GOVERNMENT. For them to say just becsuse his numbers are down so we dhould allow him another term is wrong.
ReplyDeleteTerm limits!! Now, get the heck OUT!!! Next....
ReplyDeleteno more than four years fo all of them especially the president. .any one over 65 shou have to retire. they are to old and set in their ways . most of them are napping when someone is speaking eight years is enough fo all of them. polosi reed obama and hillery are brain dead. 8YEARS IS ENOUGH AND NO PENSION. GET A REAL JOB
ReplyDeleteWE MUST DEFINITELY KEEP TERM LIMITS SO THAT WE CAN GET RID OF SCUM LIKE OBAMA AND ALL DEMOCRATS/PROGRESSIVES/COMMUNISTS !!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteTerm limits should apply. Period end of story. This country is screwed enough let alone a 3rd term with a greedy mman such as Obama.
ReplyDeleteThere is no way this country is in the mood to amend the constitution to allow Obama a 3rd term. Not going to happen. With much of the country already screaming to increase term limits on other political offices to end career politicians bedfellow relationships they would have to find a way outside the constitution to do it.
ReplyDeleteThere were many who thought there was no way this country was 'in the mood' for Obama's SECOND term... yet here we are.
ReplyDeleteNot only no, but Hell No...Obama should never be re-elected even if there wasn't any term limits.
ReplyDeleteTwo terms were good enough for great men why would we want to give more to someone who isn't?
ReplyDeleteLiberalism sure is a mental disorder...
ReplyDeleteTerm limits were put into place for a reason. Unless one wants to allow a dictatorship, then maybe you should move to another country.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that a president should be able to have more than 2 terms, this way they cannot become a dictator (hopefully) we are losing more and more of our freedom and rights.already some one has fooled with the constitution, this SHOULD NOT BE ALOUD !!!!!!!!! EVER
ReplyDeleteRoosevelt was a disaster with four terms, to forget the lessons of history, is for the foolhardy.
