This week's parsha is Genesis 28:10 to 32:3
This week's Torah portion begins with Jacob leaving Beer Sheva for Harran. On the first leg of Jacob's journey, he has a dream where angels are ascending and descending a ladder. God appears and gives Jacob the assurance that he too is a recipient of the special covenant God made with Abraham. Expansive land and numerous descendants are promised. And God reminds Jacob "all peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring." After this life-giving encounter, Jacob finds his way to the well near Harran where shepherds are gathering to water their sheep. It was at the well that he met Rachel the shepherd, the daughter of his uncle, the woman whom he strives to marry for 14 years. Wells are a powerful symbol in the Bible of expanding covenant, inclusion, and kindness. We will trace the messianic thread, well to well, from Abraham to Jesus.
