This week's Torah portion covers Deuteronomy 29:9 to 30:20. Moses is now 120 years old and it is the last day of his life. The people of Israel are standing before Moses as he lays out the final terms of the covenant. He is asking them to seal the covenant with an oath so that God may confirm them as His people. God has chosen them, but they must reciprocate and also choose God. Except, there is a very unique line in the in the 29th chapter.
Moses says, "I am making this covenant, with its oath, not only with you who are standing here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God but also with those who are not here today." According to the sages, Moses is referring to all future generations of Jews when he references "those who are not here today." They too are passing into covenant with the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They too owe God their allegiance for delivering their ancestors out of Egypt and preserving them in the desert.
