It works in China. Filter out the messages you don't want the people to see and that way you get to control the messages received by the people. North Korea has created the ultimate allegiance from its citizens by robbing them of the freedom to receive information which would motivate the people to rise up and demand freedom, education... food.
The system works, though it's being used for nefarious purposes by tyrants. But what if it was used in ultra-radical Muslim countries in order to shield them from material they obviously can't handle? The rioting against the US embassy in Egypt followed by the barbaric killing of the US ambassador in Libya are the result of viewing a Youtube video insulting the "prophet" Muhammad. Now, what if they never saw it?
It is possible to block these social networking sites altogether from people groups who have a difficult time with the material. Youtube as well as all of the rest of these websites are full of anti-Muslim rhetoric. And it really does seem true that the fuse is mighty short on the tempers of these members of the radical elements of Islam, the religion responsible for the vast majority of terrorism around the world.
So why not? Why not hit the "kill switch" for social networking sites in countries made up predominantly of Muslim extremists like Egypt, Libya, etc. It would solve two issues:
1. It would protect the weak minded Islamists from the material which so greatly offends them. Unlike westerners (apparently) the radicals can't watch any offensive material without building the uncontrollable urge to go on a killing spree. Since their faith is so weak as to not be able to withstand the content of a very poorly made anti-Islamic youtube video then we would be doing them a great service by shielding the from it.
2. It would prevent them from using the twitter and facebook networks to coordinate attacks on US interests. They would have to use other, more primitive forms of communication (smoke signals, etc) which may inhibit their ability to form a massive killing machine in the form of a crowd of blood-thirsty terrorists.
I say block it. Stop tormenting those poor Muslims with material which poses such a threat to their faith that they have to kill other people. Let's kill the internet in those countries. Let them have their religion... as frail as it obviously is.
