But the officials told ABC News on Friday that until more definitive DNA testing was complete, it remained too early to consider indicting the surviving brother, 19-year-old Dhzokhar Tsarnaev.
His brother, Tamerlan, 26, died in a police shootout four days after the April 15 blasts that killed three people and injured more than 260 others. He was buried on Thursday in Virginia.
The marathon bombings led authorities in Middlesex County to investigate a link between the elder Tsarnaev and Brendan Mess, one of the three men killed in a gruesome slaying on Sept. 11, 2011, ABC reports.
Officials said Mess and two other men were found in a Waltham residence with their throats slit and their bodies covered with marijuana. Tamerlan and Mess were once roommates and did boxing and martial arts training together.
Some crime scene forensic evidence now provides a match to the Tsarnaev brothers, authorities told ABC. Records of cell phones used by the Tsarnaevs appear to put them in the area of the murders on that date.
