Obama: I HAVE DECIDED! NO UNILATERAL ACTION!

Obama's Speech in Rose Garden (1:50 PM ET)
August 31, 2013

REGARDING GOING TO WAR WITH SYRIA:

 HUGE PRESIDENTIAL TURN AROUND!

THE US SHOULD TAKE ACTION AGAINST SYRIA - BUT ONLY WITH CONGRESSIONAL APPROVAL.  Congress returns on September 9, 2013.

QUESTIONS THE MEDIA IS ASKING NOW:

What if Congress votes it down? John Kerry just said yesterday, "The whole world is watching us. What message will we send then?"

What if Congress votes it down?  Will Obama go ahead and go to war with Syria anyway?

What happened to the "sense of urgency" that Obama spoke of just yesterday?  Now...it would be months - if ever  - before action is taken.

Why did Obama not immediately convene Congress when this whole mess first started?

Has Obama simply boxed himself into a corner and is now looking for a way out?

Why doesn't Obama call Congress back - RIGHT NOW?  We thought this was an "emergency" situation.

FROM OBAMA'S SPEECH:

"I have decided that we SHOULD take military action in Syria."

"I will seek authorization for the use of force from the American people's representatives in Congress."

"Congress will schedule a debate and then a vote when Congress comes back from recess in the coming days."

"I am comfortable in going forward without the approval of the UN Security Council."

"While I believe I have the authority to carry out this specific military action WITHOUT the approval of Congress ... I will do so anyway."

"What message will we send if a dictator can gas hundreds of children and women in plain sight and we do nothing?"

"We cannot raise in our children in a world where we do not do what we say."

"I ask all members of Congress of both parties to take this action for the sake of our national security."

"I believe that the people's representatives must be invested in this decision."

"There are no easy options."

"Our democracy is stronger when Congress and the Office of the President stand together."
