Those killed were Daniel Stein, 71; Joyce Feinberg, 75; Richard Gottfried, 65; Rose Mallinger, 97; Jerry Rabinowitz, 66; brothers Cecil Rosenthal, 59, and David Rosenthal 54; husband and wife Bernice Simon, 84 and Sylvan Simon, 86; Melvin Wax, 88; and Irving Younger, 69.

Those present at the normally quiet and peaceful synagogue at the time were either there as part of their normal Sabbath communal prayers or to participate in a new baby naming ceremony.

They were there to worship God and to celebrate new life. Who could have known that evil was lurking?

I know the wounds are open and still bleeding. I know that all of you have been praying and grieving with the families of the victims and witnesses.

The Psalmist says "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." This is my prayer.
